Hemphill County Extension

The Wheeler County Extension is a member of the Texas A&M University System. Its mission is to provide quality, relevant outreach and continuing education programs and services to the people of Wheeler County.

The AgriLife Extension Service operates in a unique partnership with federal, state, and county government to address the needs of people in every community. The Extension provides education in food and fiber systems, environment and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, 4-H and youth development, and community and economic development.

Wheeler County is a rolling plain with sandhills, creeks and the Red River. Agriculture is the primary source of income in the county with a total of $80 million. Major commodities include fed beef, beef cows, stocker cattle, hay, wheat, cotton and peanuts. Livestock sales accounted for 95% of the total and 5% from crops. Abundant wildlife resources offer an opportunity to supplement agricultural income. There are 505 farms with an average size of 1, 018 acres.
