The Monticello Field Office, located in the southeast corner of Utah, is known for its striking landscapes, extraordinary scenery, and backcountry recreation. Activities such as livestock grazing, mineral exploration, fire wood collection, and commercial recreation help support local communities and traditional ways of life. The area is best known for providing opportunities to explore the past, through the legacy left by the anscestors of today's American Indians, including hundreds of cliff dwellings and thousands of pictographs and petroglyphs. Early Utah Pioneers also explored these rugged canyons and mesas, leaving traces of the Old Spanish Trail and Hole in the Rock Trail. The 75 mile Comb Ridge Monocline forms the backbone of the Shash Jáa Unit of the Bears Ears National Monument, and the Indian Creek Unit is internationally recognized for its technical rock climbing and rock art. Grand Gulch cuts a serpentine swath through Cedar Mesa and is the heart of the Grand Gulch and Butler Wash Historic Districts. The San Juan River is popular for whitewater rafting.
