Bowie County Extension

Today, Bowie County has a population of approximately 90,000 people, fifty percent of that population lives in Texarkana. Bowie County is diverse, ranging from a suburban lifestyle to a very rural way of life.

In the early 1800′s, Caddo Indians inhabited this area, when white men first came to explore and settle. The Caddo were a non-nomadic tribe, living in conical, grass thatched huts. They raised corn, beans, squash, sunflowers and tobacco.

Bowie County has changed over the years, as have the needs of its residents. To address those needs, the staff of Bowie County of Texas Cooperative Extension offers a wide variety of educational programs and informational literature. Programs are offered in traditional agriculture, 4-H and youth development, horticulture and family and consumer sciences.
